How to Cook Haddock

How To Cook Haddock

How To Cook Haddock

How To Cook Haddock: Team Duck Egg Designs were very fortunate to be able to ask Paul Bentley (Chef to the stars) for some tips on how to cook haddock as beautifully as he does.

January is a great month for round white fish. West Yorkshire, where Paul lives has always preferred haddock over the national favourite cod.
Paul says:
“So what is the difference? Well for me, haddock is sweeter and cod is flaky and succulent. Cod tends to be more prone to parasites and can often be sold out of condition and tasteless.”

let's get cookingHow To Cook Haddock:
  • Get the thick end of haddock from a good fish merchant rather than the supermarket.
  • Ask him/her to leave the skin on but remove the ‘pin bones’.
Team Duck Egg ask:
“How do you make your fish so nice Paul”?
“Simple- a good non-stick pan, a little oil, some good butter to start , a little fresh lemon juice and some foil.”
Then..
  • Warm an oven to ‘rest the fish’.
  • Season the fish well and carefully.
  • Dust with a little flour and knock any excess off.
  • Warm the sauté/frying pan.
Oil the pan; lay the fish in the pan to sizzle and the secret is not to move the fish for a good few minutes. If the pan is getting too hot remove the pan from the heat and adjust the heat bring the pan back onto the heat.
Add some butter and swirl the pan and the butter will go brown and ‘smell nutty’ squeeze some lemon juice in and shake the pan.
Top the fish with a little foil or grease proof paper and place in the oven without turning the fish over 4 or 5 minutes. 8 – 10 minutes in total.
Team Duck Egg ask:
“How do you suggest serving this dish Paul”?
A good fish slice and onto a warm plate with the haddock, peel of the sin and turn over to show a golden, crispy surface.
This is a great way to enjoy good fish, salmon is good this way too.
Team Duck Egg ask:
“Accompaniments?”
Melt a pot of brown shrimps into the pan and add some fresh parsley and pour over the haddock.
Brown Shrimp in a Pan
Sauté potatoes with a handful of chorizo and garden peas piled up alongside the fish.
Potatoes and Chorizo
Try some new potatoes with fresh chopped mint, even in winter.
“Alternatively, a pot of cauliflower cheese with leeks as a wholesome veggie dish.
Team Duck Egg:
“Yummy!!!!”
We like to thank Paul for sharing his tips and hope he will join us again soon with another wonderful  dish!

How To Make Christmas Stocking Fillers

Christmas stocking fillers can be expensive, but let these ideas inspire you to upcycle everyday objects into presents for creative and thoughtful gifts to add originality to any stocking! For presents that last beyond Christmas, Ellie Harrington of Duck Egg Designs looks at how to make Christmas stocking fillers.

 Map Coasters

Map Coasters

Map Coasters:

The perfect gift for remembering special places, these personalised coasters feature maps of memorable sites. They are romantic, thoughtful and a great talking point. To commemorate a special round the world trip these coasters map an unforgettable voyage.

Materials:

Map - Round plain cork coasters - Glue sealant - Brush - Scissors - Card

How to make Christmas Stocking Fillers – Map Coasters.

Map Coasters
Using plain cork coasters trace around your coasters onto card to make your template. Use the templates to trace around on to the back of your map, taking care to include the area of significance. Carefully cut around the shape making sure to keep clean edges. Paste glue sealant onto the top of the coaster and the place the map cut outs onto coaster. Once this is dry then coat seal top of the coaster with the glue sealant.
Ellie says:
“Everyone who comes round always enjoys these the coasters and goes home to make them for themselves.”

How to make Christmas Stocking Fillers – Rosebud Heart Wreath.

Rosebud Heart Wreath
This easy statement piece is a gorgeous gift and also makes a lovely present to a host at a Christmas party.
Materials:
  • Dried rosebuds
  • Malleable Wire (should be strong enough to hold its shape with the weight of the buds.)
  • Wire cutters
  • Ribbon
How to make Rosebud Heart Wreath:
Thread your rosebuds onto the wire, using a needle to make the hole if the wire is not strong enough. Start to bend the wire as you add your buds. We love a heart shape for impact or you could do an initial or even a whole word. When the wire meets allow a 2 cm overlap and wrap the end pieces together and trim wire. Wrap ribbon over the join and knot and tie the ends into a bow.
Ellie says:
“We placed our Rosebud Heart Wreath in our kitchen, hanging of our apron hooks to give the room a warm Christmas and traditional feel. These really are simple and fun to make and you could experiment with a number of different flowers and dyes if you want to try something a little more funky.”

How to make Christmas Stocking Fillers - Marbled Stationery

Marbled StationaryThese marbled pencils and matching notebook are an ideal Christmas present and can involve all the family for crafting fun! These bring any  vintage interiors to life.
Materials:
  • How To Make Christmas Stocking FillersMarbling inks
  • Shallow tray
  • Paper
  • Round pencils
  • Notebook
  • PVA glue
  • Pencil sharpener
How to make Marbled Stationery:
Decide what colour scheme you would like to have and add your chosen marbling inks to a shallow tray of water. Use a paintbrush or spatula to swirl your designs. Place your paper delicately on top and lift off with care when you can see the inks holding onto the paper, leaving to dry flat. For the pencils cut the paper into rectangles and allow a 2 mm overlap on the longest side of the rectangle. Apply PVA evenly and roll the marbled paper tightly around the pencil taking care to align the edges and once dry sharpen the pencil. For the notebook repeat the marbling steps and then allow a 1 cm overlap.  Cut diagonals at the corner to create neat edges and apply PVA taking care to smooth any air bubbles from the paper. Little ones will love helping create unique designs although aprons are a must!

How to make Christmas Stocking Fillers - Scented Fabric Heart

Older children will be absorbed for hours creating these scented sachets to use as decorations for a vintage tree or as presents.
Materials:
How to make a Fabric Scented Heart
  • Small pieces of fabric
  • Ribbon
  • Dried lavender
  • Stuffing
  • Card heart template
  • Pinking shears
  • Needle and thread/sewing machine
How to make a Fabric Scented Heart:
Cut out your shape by pinning the fabric together, we are usingvintage fabric prints from the Duck Egg range and using a template to cut out two identical pieces. Use pinking shears so fabric edges will be neat, but still have a rustic feel. (Alternatively sew inside out for a smooth finish on the outer edge). With this sewing craft you will need to put the fabric with the plain sides together.  Tuck your ribbon inside the upper seam and pin your ribbon on the top of the shape, seen here at the top centre of the heart. Sew around the heart leaving a two cm gap.
Place in some dried lavender and fill with stuffing. Sew up the hole following on from the previous sewing line.
Ellie says:
“These fabric scented hearts look beautiful hanging on a door handle or just tuck away on a shelf or dresser. They make the perfect little Christmas presents for friends and family.”

Oh I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside

Oh I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside Poster

Oh I do like to be beside the seaside poster

This is seaside poster was inspired by a recent holiday on the North Norfolk Coast where we spent our days in and out the sea and building sand castles. The tradition English song and saying Oh I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside Poster was inspired after Mr Duck Egg built a huge sand castle and our little boy added a British flag to finish it off! It was a very British holiday!

Oh I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside Poster can come with the British Flag or without and is a silhouette of the sandcastle Mr Duck Egg and our little rascal made. With all our posters and prints we hope it evokes a moment or feeling you can relate to that brings a great feeling to a room or your interiors.

The  Oh I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside Poster is available in any colour you want (we will colour match any colour). We believe these give any wall a unique, vibrant burst of colour, style and a bespoke finish.

Duck Egg Vintage Interiors Update

Vintage Interiors Mood Board

Modern Vintage Interiors Update

Hello everyone!

It has been some time since our last blog, we have been very busy working and collaborating with a number of you within the Duck Egg creative community, coming up with more interesting ideas, projects and creating more vintage interiors. As always your feedback is a driving force behind everything we do and the direction of the Duck Egg.

Delighted to say we have been approached to write our first book on modern vintage interiors! We are very excited and can’t wait to get a moment to start, release date is set for 2015 so thankfully we have a bit of time to get it right! Modern Vintage Interiors is looking like the name of the book but any ideas on a better name would greatly be appreciated?

A big part of the last few months has been working on our new fabrics and cushions. We are going to attempt to make our first video showcasing the new designs, if you are a Facebook follower then you have already had a sneek peek. We are delighted with them and they are situated everywhere in our house.

We are on the look out for a number of bloggers and writers who want to contribute to the Site and reach out to the Duck Egg Community. We are very keen to find a gardening expert and a bakery expert to share some of their hints and tips for the garden and the kitchen. If interested then please email us at info@duckeggdesigns.com and have your article be read by more than 50,000 people a month! (no pressure!) ;) .

One of the big requests we received via email and via twitter was for more vintage posters and a post card range. The post cards are in the pipeline but at the moment the focus has been on continuing the poster range designed by Ellie and Nick Harrington. The range continues on the theme of a fresh, modern, fun poster that looks good in any room and we are delighted to say we are still offering the colour match service so you can perfectly match your room colours to ensure the posters blend in perfectly with your interior.

Since returning from a wonderful summer holiday on the Norfolk Broads we have had lots of inspiration for a new range of coastal posters and water based themes that provoke a lot of happy memories for us and we hope have similar connections with you.

We made a little video of our Norfolk adventure for you:

Duck Egg Holiday

As always a huge thanks the you, the blog, twitter and Facebook supporters we hugely appreciate all the support and messages and everyday we get a little closer to launching a Duck Egg Designs shop with all our products plus tea and cake of course.

Watch this space for a series of new product launches coming soon.

Hope everyone is well, crafting, designing and inspiring themselves and others.

All the best with your modern vintage interiors!
